He was arrested for "carrying a pistol" in 1915. After that he was sent to prison in 1918 for killing a man. The only reason he made it out to start his blues career was that he wrote a song to the governor that was so good he was pardoned. Of course the reason Huddie Ledbetter got his nickname was because he survived a shotgun blast to the chest is a perfect example of why he is in the hall of fame.
